Job Description

Job Summary

The Instructional Assistant will work under the direction of the Coordinator of Learning Support to provide extensive support to Indigenous Academic Upgrading programs at a satellite campus. The successful candidate will work independently and as part of a team to provide academic and cultural support to students, manage the operations of a networked computer learning lab, and serve as a liaison between the partnership site and Camosun College resources.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide leadership and support to a diverse student body by reinforcing program objectives and individual learning plans.
  • Manage the administrative aspects of the satellite location, including inventory management and troubleshooting.
  • Respond to student inquiries, provide information and advice, and refer students to appropriate resources.
  • Liaise with instructors to identify students with learning disabilities and ensure clear communication.
  • Administer final and practice tests, including invigilation and marking.
  • Provide support and assistance to instructors in facilitating classroom activities and creating resources.
  • Tutor students in reading, writing, mathematics, science, and computers up to Provincial levels.
  • Introduce and orient students to learning materials and resources.
  • Teach students how to use a PC in a network environment.
  • Provide basic troubleshooting of computer hardware and software technical difficulties.
  • Set procedures for student usage of the learning centre and monitor the flow of usage.
  • Support students through the registration process and maintain accurate records.
  • Perform other related duties similar in scope and complexity.
Qualifications
  • Two years of relevant post-secondary education and two years of experience working with adult learners.
  • Advanced level knowledge and skill with personal computers and software applications.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with adults with learning disabilities and sensitivity towards learners with multi-barrier student issues.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, demonstrating tact, discretion, and sensitivity to a diverse student population.
  • Demonstrated time-management, multi-tasking, and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of college structure, resources, and services available to support students.
  • Ability to support and tutor learners up to and including Provincial levels of English and Math.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Must possess knowledge of and sensitivity to the cultural and learning needs of Indigenous students.
