POSITION: ELL INSTRUCTIONAL SUPPORT SPECIALIST

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A minimum of thirty-sixty college credit hours from an accredited institution is required, successful completion of the Paraprofessional assessment in Missouri or the Missouri 20-hour Online Substitute Training Program; sixty college hours are preferred.
  • A valid Missouri Teaching Certificate is preferred.
  • Possession of the necessary knowledge, skills, abilities, and physical attributes to effectively perform the essential functions of the role.
  • Alternatives to the above qualifications may be considered as acceptable by the Board.

REPORTS TO: Building Principal, ELL Program Coordinator

Direct Supervisor: ELL Teacher

JOB OBJECTIVE: To support the execution of all components of the English Language Learners program within the school.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

To successfully fulfill this role, an individual must be capable of performing each key responsibility satisfactorily.   • Under the guidance of the ELL teacher, plans and delivers English language development instruction to designated ELL students in small groups or individual sessions.
  • Collaborates with ELL and classroom teachers to provide small group instruction to ELL students within the regular classroom environment.
  • Engages in communication and collaboration with the ELL teacher and classroom teachers to design and implement suitable instruction for ELL students.
  • Communicates with staff members, families, and others regarding the needs of ELL students.
  • Assists in administering and scoring language assessments.
  • Aids in the necessary reporting and record-keeping related to ELL students and the ELL program.
  • Supports ELL and classroom teachers in developing tailored strategies to reinforce material or skills, considering individual students' cultural, linguistic, and academic backgrounds.
  • Aids the ELL teacher in maintaining effective home-school communication; requests interpreters from the ELL office when needed.
  • Supervises students during emergency drills, assemblies, and other activities.
  • Acts as the primary source of information and assistance for any substitute teacher filling in for the ELL teacher.
  • Serves as a substitute for the ELL teacher as needed on an emergency basis.
  • Upholds a high standard of ethical behavior and confidentiality regarding student information, consistent with expectations for fully licensed educators.
  • May be assigned routine clerical tasks such as filing and typing.
  • May be assigned specific duties such as hallway supervision, bus duty, car rider duty, in-school suspension, or after-school detention.
  • Bilingual ELL instructional assistants may be required to interpret and/or translate documents during working hours.
  • Demonstrates effective interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Adheres to all district rules, regulations, and policies.
  • Regular and consistent attendance is a critical function of this position.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The individual in this position is regularly required to walk, hear, and speak, and must possess close, moderate, and distance vision abilities. This role may require travel between district facilities and involves a moderate level of physical activity.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment aligns with a typical office/school setting.

EMPLOYMENT TERMS: Salary and work calendar to be determined by the Board of Education. Benefits are in accordance with Board policies.

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt
