Legal Counsel Advocate for Indigenous Justice

The BC First Nations Justice Council is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Legal Counsel to join our team in Nanaimo, BC. As a key member of our Indigenous Justice Centre, you will play a vital role in reducing the overrepresentation of Indigenous people in the criminal justice system and supporting Nations as they move towards sovereignty over justice.
**About Us**
The BC First Nations Justice Council is responsible to 204 First Nations in BC, working in partnership with provincial and federal governments to empower Indigenous communities and provide culturally safe and Indigenized programs and services. Our rapidly growing team is committed to excellence and is looking for a talented Legal Counsel to contribute to our mission.
**Job Summary**
We are seeking a seasoned legal professional with experience in litigation and a passion for Indigenous justice. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing legal representation for Indigenous clients facing criminal charges, advocating for diversion from the formal court system, and collaborating with community partners to develop and implement culturally safe solutions.
**Key Responsibilities**
- Provide legal representation for Indigenous clients in criminal and child protection matters
- Advocate for diversion from the formal court system through Indigenous intervention protocols and alternative dispute resolution processes
- Develop and maintain working relationships with Indigenous communities, service providers, and government agencies
- Collaborate with clients, families, and communities to develop and propose alternate care plans that prioritize cultural safety and well-being
- Compile and submit statistical data as required
Requirements
- Membership in a Canadian Law Society, preferably British Columbia
- 1-5 years' litigation experience in criminal defence, with knowledge of MCFD (child welfare) matters an asset
- Knowledge of local and urban Indigenous cultures
- Strong understanding of Canada's Criminal Justice System and British Columbia's child protection system
- Valid Driver's License and ability to travel
What We Offer**
- Competitive salary range: $90,000 - $150,000, commensurate with education and experience
