About the Role

We are seeking a seasoned Group Underwriting professional to join our team as Senior Group Underwriting Director. This leadership position plays a key role in shaping the strategic direction of our Group business.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop, implement, and refine underwriting guidelines, practices, and procedures for the Group Division, balancing risk assessment with business growth while ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Lead new business and renewal underwriting activities, collaborating closely with Group Sales and other departments to attract, implement, and retain Group clients.
  • Coach, develop, and provide ongoing guidance to a team of six managers and their staff, fostering a strong employee engagement environment.
  • Oversee large case underwriting decisions and work with external reinsurance partners to support business growth.
  • Collaborate with Group departments (Product, Marketing, Pricing, Distribution, Operations, Finance, Technology) to develop new and existing products and services aligned with client needs.
  • Sponsor IT and operational projects simplifying quotation, onboarding, servicing, and renewal processes for clients and distribution partners.
  • Maintain service and quality metrics for underwriting, client support, and client onboarding.
  • Manage non-standard contractual exceptions and coverage requests.
  • Establish and manage team operational budgets and business growth investments.
  • Participate in developing the Group business strategic plan.
  • Collaborate with sales teams to develop and maintain key relationships with distribution partners.
Requirements:
  • 15+ years of Group underwriting knowledge and experience.
  • Exceptional knowledge of group benefits and understanding of business & market implications.
  • Proven ability to balance decision-making to attract, retain, and renew business.
  • Disciplined, creative leader accomplished at writing balanced guidelines for others to follow.
  • A strong background in process management preferably in a client-facing environment requiring strong attention to detail and experience in sponsoring process improvement initiatives.
  • A collaborative and influential leader who is credible and builds and maintains an environment of trust with internal teams, sales partners, and external distribution relationships.
  • Polished negotiation, communication, and presentation skills.
  • University degree required.
  • Industry designations an asset.
About the Opportunity

This is a hybrid role based in Waterloo, ON, with a minimum of two assigned consecutive days every other week plus a fifth assigned day per month. The ideal candidate will have a strong track record of successful leadership in Group underwriting and client servicing.
