Job Summary

As a key member of the CN team, the Mechanical Operations Supervisor plays a critical role in ensuring the safe and efficient maintenance and repair of railcars and locomotives. This position requires strong leadership and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to work effectively with unionized staff and other stakeholders.

Main Responsibilities

Safety Orientation, Compliance and Enforcement

• Develop and implement safety procedures to minimize risks and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.

• Conduct regular safety inspections and audits to identify areas for improvement.

• Provide training and coaching to employees on safe work practices and procedures.

• Investigate incidents and near-misses to identify root causes and implement corrective actions.

Problem Solving and Decision Making

• Analyze data to identify trends and areas for improvement in car inspection and repair productivity.

• Develop and implement strategies to improve fleet reliability and reduce dwell times.

• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to resolve issues and improve overall performance.

Planning and Organizing Workload

• Develop and implement plans to ensure efficient use of resources and minimize downtime.

• Coordinate with shift supervisors to prioritize tasks and allocate resources effectively.

• Monitor and report on key performance indicators (KPIs) to ensure alignment with business objectives.

General Leadership and Supervision of both Union & Non-Union Workforce

• Provide coaching and feedback to employees to improve performance and address areas for improvement.

• Develop and implement training programs to enhance skills and knowledge.

• Foster a positive and inclusive work environment that promotes teamwork and collaboration.

Working Conditions

The Mechanical Shop operates 24/7 in all weather conditions. The Mechanical Operations Supervisor works on rotating shifts (days, afternoons, midnights) covering the 24/7 operation.

Requirements

Experience

• Minimum 4 years supervisory experience of both union and non-union employees.

• Minimum 3 years of experience in railroad Mechanical Shopcraft or comparable position.

Education/Certification/Designation

• High School Diploma.

• Valid Driver's Licence.

• Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.

• Technician or Technologist Diploma in Mechanical or Electrical.
