Mechanical Supervisor

As a key member of the CN team, the Mechanical Supervisor (Car) plays a critical role in ensuring the safe and efficient maintenance and repair of railcars and locomotives. This position requires strong leadership and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to work effectively with unionized staff and other stakeholders.
Main ResponsibilitiesSafety Orientation, Compliance and Enforcement
• Develop and implement safety procedures to minimize risks and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
• Conduct regular safety inspections and audits to identify areas for improvement.
• Provide training and coaching to employees on safe work practices and procedures.
• Investigate incidents and near-misses to identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
• Collaborate with the Dangerous Goods Officer to ensure safe handling and transportation of hazardous materials.
• Develop and maintain standard operating procedures to ensure consistency and efficiency.
• Monitor and report on safety performance metrics to identify trends and areas for improvement.
Problem Solving and Decision Making
• Analyze data to identify trends and areas for improvement in car inspection and repair productivity.
• Develop and implement strategies to improve fleet reliability and reduce dwell times.
• Collaborate with Transportation and Engineering teams to resolve issues and restore service to the operation.
• Make informed decisions to optimize resource allocation and improve overall efficiency.
Planning and Organizing Workload
• Develop and implement plans to ensure shift supervisors utilize crews effectively.
• Certify that car inspection and productivity standards are maintained to ensure train arrival and departure in accordance with the service plan.
• Identify opportunities to reduce bad-order counts and dwell times to increase availability.
• Collaborate with the Maintenance team to ensure overall utilization is maximized.
• Maintain inventory of personal protective equipment (PPE), parts, and other essential supplies.
General Leadership and Supervision of both Union & Non-Union Workforce
• Communicate company goals and policies to create a clear understanding of direction and expectations.
• Lead the EPS process to evaluate supervisor and employee performance and review performance expectations.
• Conduct investigations and discipline employees in accordance with collective agreement and company policies.
• Develop and sustain the right employee behaviors through feedback, recognition, reinforcement, and coaching.
• Administer payroll and time-off requests for employees.
• Lead account payable responsibilities, including paying and authorizing invoices.
Working Conditions
The Mechanical Shop operates 24/7 in all weather conditions. The Mechanical Supervisor (Car) works on rotating shifts (days, afternoons, midnights) covering the 24/7 operation.
Requirements
Experience
• Minimum 4 years supervisory experience of both union and non-union employees.
• Minimum 3 years of experience in railroad Mechanical Shopcraft or comparable position.
Education/Certification/Designation
• High School Diploma.
• Valid Driver's Licence.
• Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.
• Technician or Technologist Diploma in Mechanical or Electrical.

• Bilingualism: French and English.
Technical Skills/Knowledge
• Time management.
• Good computer skills: working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs (Excel, Word), SRS, SAP, PAP, and with applications such as RTBI, DataCity, SmartYard.
• Comprehensive knowledge of car construction and operation, inspection and repair, operating rules, Transport Canada, AAR, and mechanical railroad operations measure.
