Job Summary
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Staff Lawyer to join our team at the Indigenous Justice Centre in Surrey, BC. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for providing legal representation to Indigenous clients involved in MCFD (child welfare) proceedings and advocating on their behalf in the criminal justice system.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide legal representation to Indigenous clients in child protection and criminal matters
- Advocate on behalf of clients for diversion from the formal court system to alternative measures, including Indigenous intervention protocols, First Nations Courts, and restorative justice processes
- Work with the Resource and Support Worker to provide wrap-around services that meet the needs of clients
- Develop and maintain working relationships with Indigenous communities and service providers, probation, diversion, crown counsel, and other agencies
- Collaborate with clients, Indigenous communities, and support teams to develop and propose alternate care plans that keep children safe and with their families where possible
- Maintain comprehensive and up-to-date client files and compile statistical data as required
Requirements
- Membership in a Canadian Law Society, preferably British Columbia
- J.D. considered an asset
- 1-5 years litigation experience in criminal defence, with exposure to MCFD (child welfare) matters an asset
- Knowledge of local and urban Indigenous cultures
- Ability to provide a culturally safe environment for clients
- Knowledge of the structure and procedures of Canada's Criminal Justice System and British Columbia's child protection system
