About the Role

The Hereditary Cancer Program is a provincial program with offices across British Columbia, and we are seeking a skilled Genetic Counselor to join our team. As a Genetic Counselor, you will work with patients and their families to provide genetic counseling and testing for hereditary cancer risks.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct interviews with patients and their families to develop and complete medical and family histories.
  • Explain hereditary cancer patterns and associated cancer risks to patients and their families.
  • Recommend cancer screening based on family history and standard healthcare guidelines.
  • Explain genetic susceptibility testing and associated benefits and harms, and schedule testing as appropriate.
  • Contact genetic counseling centers outside of British Columbia to arrange testing for out-of-province family members as needed.
  • Refer patients to health professionals as necessary.
  • Document patient information, including medical history, risk assessments, and progress reports.

Qualifications and Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will have a graduate degree in Genetic Counseling and a minimum of two years of recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. You will also possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and be able to work independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team.
