About the RoleThis is a permanent full-time position working with BC Cancer's Hereditary Cancer Program. The successful applicant will work in a provincial program with offices in Vancouver Centre, Abbotsford Centre, and Victoria Centre.
Job SummaryWe are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Genetic Counselor to join our team. As a Genetic Counselor, you will provide genetic counseling to patients and their families, develop and complete medical and family histories, explain hereditary cancer patterns, and recommend cancer screening based on family history and standard guidelines.
Responsibilities- Develop and complete patients' medical and family histories by conducting interviews with patients and their family members.
- Explain the hereditary cancer pattern in the patient's family and the cancer risks associated with that pattern.
- Recommend cancer screening based on the family history and standard HCP guidelines.
- Explain genetic susceptibility testing and the associated potential benefits and harms and schedule genetic testing as appropriate.
- Contact genetic counseling centers outside of British Columbia to organize genetic counseling and testing for out-of-province family members as required.
- Refer patients to health professionals such as social workers, surgeons, and oncologists as necessary.
- Document various patient information including personal and family medical history, risk assessments, cancer surveillance strategy, and progress reports and outcomes.
To be successful in this role, you must have:
- A graduate degree in Genetic Counseling from an accredited program.
- A minimum of two years of recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Board eligibility or certification with the Canadian Association of Genetic Counsellors and/or the American Board of Genetic Counselling.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- The ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of an interdisciplinary team.

The estimated annual salary for this role is $85,000 - $110,000, depending on qualifications and experience.
