Job Description

At Chelsea Avondale, we are revolutionizing the home insurance landscape with cutting-edge risk modelling and platform technologies. As an Application Scientist, you will be part of our esteemed scientific research & engineering division, Skynet Software.

Role Overview
  • This is a challenging role that involves working with a team of renowned scientists and engineers to develop severe natural hazard models (e.g., wildfire, flood, windstorms) and their applications.
  • You will champion the development cycle from data cleaning through implementation, providing critical evaluation of scientific literature and engaging industry experts to formulate solutions to specific problems.
Key Responsibilities
  • Contribute to the scientific and technological development of severe natural hazard models.
  • Write high-performance scientific code in Python, leveraging libraries and packages to create modular, fast, and easy-to-use code.
  • Manage individual project priorities, deadlines, and deliverables with your technical expertise.
  • Calibrate and validate model components, including benchmarking to historical events.
  • Research, vet, and augment various datasets from different sources, focusing on statistical credibility.
  • Evaluate model outputs in time and space using GIS tools.
Requirements
  • BSc, MSc, or PhD in Applied Mathematics or Physics with an outstanding research track record.
  • Experience with writing high-performance scientific code in Python.
  • Broad knowledge of mathematical modelling, numerical solutions to differential equations, optimization, uncertainty quantification, Monte Carlo simulations.
  • Experience with statistical evaluation of large, multi-dimensional datasets.
  • Demonstrated experience running computer-based experiments with geophysical applications.
  • Experience in academia or industry on related topics post PhD will be beneficial.
  • Catastrophe modelling experience (e.g., flood/wildfire/severe weather) is highly desirable.
Compensation

We offer a competitive salary range of $120,000 - $180,000 per annum, depending on experience. This figure is based on national averages for similar roles in the Canadian insurance industry.
