Job Description

Chelsea Avondale is a leading home insurance group that combines cutting-edge risk modeling and platform technologies to deploy innovative solutions through its own insurance company.

We have an exceptional team of scientists, engineers, and experts working together to transform the Canadian and global insurance landscape.

This role will be joining our core engineering division, Skynet Software.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with a talented team of scientists and engineers in data-driven research and development.
  • Contribute to the advancement of severe natural hazard models (e.g., wildfire, flood, windstorms) and their applications.
  • Develop and implement scientific solutions from data cleaning to deployment.
  • Evaluate and apply scientific literature to formulate solutions to complex problems.
  • Leverage Python libraries and packages for efficient and modular scientific code.
  • Manage project priorities, deadlines, and deliverables with technical expertise.
  • Validate and calibrate model components, including benchmarking against historical events.
  • Analyze various datasets from different sources, emphasizing statistical credibility.
  • Evaluate model outputs using GIS tools.
Requirements:
  • BSc, MSc, or PhD in Applied Mathematics or Physics with a strong research background.
  • Experience in writing high-performance scientific code in Python.
  • Broad knowledge of mathematical modeling, numerical solutions, optimization, uncertainty quantification, and Monte Carlo simulations.
  • Statistical evaluation of large, multi-dimensional datasets.
  • Experience running computer-based experiments with geophysical applications.
  • Academic or industry experience on related topics post PhD is beneficial.
  • Catastrophe modeling experience in flood/wildfire/severe weather is preferred.

Estimated Salary Range: $120,000 - $180,000 per year
