About the Role

We are seeking a skilled Mechanical Maintenance Specialist to join our team at the Government of Nova Scotia. As a key member of our Facilities Operations team, you will be responsible for ensuring the smooth operation and maintenance of our building infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities
  • Monitor and maintain mechanical, electrical, water, sewage, ventilation, and heating systems to ensure efficient performance and a safe working environment.
  • Perform routine maintenance tasks, including janitorial duties, basic lawn care, minor carpentry, mechanical and electrical repairs, and snow and ice control.
  • Administer service contracts and monitor contractors to ensure compliance with regulations and standards.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to achieve team goals and objectives.
Requirements
  • Grade 10 plus two (2) years of related experience in the operation of commercial or institutional buildings.
  • General knowledge of all aspects of building construction and operation, including architectural, plumbing, electrical, fire suppression, HVAC systems, and sewage treatment.
  • Thorough knowledge of operating lawn tractors, cleaning equipment, supplies, and current janitorial practices.
  • Computer skills and ability to maintain electronic records.
  • Good planning and organizational skills, strong public relations skills, and a positive attitude.
  • Ability to work at heights and operate a man lift.
  • Driver's license with air brake endorsement (considered an asset).
Assets
  • Power Engineer designation, facilities Maintenance Mechanic Certificate, or vocational training in the plumbing or electrical field.
  • Level 1 certification as a Wastewater Treatment Operator as recognized by the Nova Scotia Department of Environment.
  • Familiarity with the National Building Code and the National Fire Code.
  • Familiarity with the Occupational Safety General Regulations, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Departmental Health Safety and Environment Program, Policies and Procedures.
Working Conditions

Work is performed in a mechanical repair environment with occasional exposure to noise, smoke, and gas fumes. Considerable standing, lifting, carrying, and moving about is required.
