Rehabilitation Counsellor

Join our team at the Aboriginal Health and Wellness Centre as a Rehabilitation Counsellor, providing long-term case management, systems navigation, and counselling services to individuals in need of care.
Job SummaryThe Rehabilitation Counsellor will work with clients who are no longer in crisis but still require support. The focus is on providing intake and assessment, counselling, referrals, educational sessions, and development of treatment plans to address concerns related to addiction, alcohol, and drug use.
Key Responsibilities- Welcoming and supporting Indigenous and non-Indigenous community members entering the AHWC/RAAM Clinic
- Nurturing a judgement-free, shame-free environment focused on harm-reduction and healing
- Emphasizing culturally sensitive, culturally relevant, person-centered care
- Maintaining key working relationships with withdrawal management services, addiction treatment agencies, and other stakeholders
- Facilitating problem-solving techniques with clients and supporting a Collaborative Care Model
- Documenting client information in a clear and concise manner
- Providing education on cognitive strategies for coping with cravings and practical guidance on relationships, housing, and finances
- Encouraging patients to seek help from community resources and the Cultural Coordinator at the Indigenous-led RAAM Clinic
- Completion of a recognized degree or diploma in Social Services or a related health discipline
- Minimum six months working with individuals and families managing addiction
- Minimum two years' mental health experience at the para-professional level, providing support services to adults with addiction and mental illness
- Basic familiarity of a range of addiction and mental illness presentations
- Basic knowledge of Mental Health Programs and Services
- Familiarity with relevant aspects of the Mental Health Act, Personal Health Information Act, and Child & Family Services Act
- Understanding of Trauma Informed Care
- Knowledge and experience in working with people with substance-related concerns
- Mental Health First Aide and ASIST certificates or willingness to obtain
- Nonviolent Crisis Intervention training, preferred
- Computer skills including Internet and Microsoft Programs (Word, Outlook)
- Working knowledge of Electronic Medical Records (EMR), preferred
- Addiction-related training is an asset
The Rehabilitation Counsellor will work in a fast-paced environment with unexpected deadlines and interruptions. The position requires good coping skills and stress management.
