Ottawa, Ontario, Canada First Nations Financial Management Board Full time

We are seeking a highly skilled Commercial Legal Counsel to join our team at the First Nations Financial Management Board. This role is an exciting opportunity for a motivated and experienced legal professional to contribute to the development, enactment, and approval of financial administration laws and bylaws.

Job Description
  • Provide guidance and support to clients and staff on the development, enactment, and approval of financial administration laws and bylaws;
  • Liaise with various stakeholders, partners, organizations, and individuals to build relationships and provide expert advice;
  • Conduct formal reviews of financial administration laws and bylaws, provide legal opinions, and recommend approvals by the Board of Directors;
  • Collaborate with Executive Board Coordinator, Director, IELR, and other business line directors to provide all SAC and Board documents;
  • Notifies the FN Gazette for publication of Laws after the SAC Committee and Board meetings.
Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  1. Providing operational support and guidance to Relationship Managers, clients, and their legal counsel on drafting and execution of legal documents;
  2. Conducting informal and formal legal review of legal documents to determine compliance with FAL Standards and Procedures;
  3. Preparing SAC and Board resolutions and materials including legal opinions and advice to the Board on issuing compliance approvals;
  4. Supporting clients to achieve Financial Management System Certification;
  5. Performing other duties as assigned.
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • A Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or Juris Doctor (JD);
  • To be a practicing member in good standing with the Law Society of your province or eligibility to transfer from another Canadian jurisdiction;
  • Experience working with Federal Government organizations and representatives, Indigenous Governments, organizations, and communities;
  • Fluency in English and French (spoken and written);
  • Adaptability and flexibility to various competing demands with proficiency at managing high work volumes in a fast-paced environment.
