Job Title: Duty Counsel - Family Law Specialist

Legal Aid Ontario is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Duty Counsel - Family Law Specialist to join our team in Ottawa. As a key member of our legal services team, you will provide critical support to clients navigating family law matters.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide family law duty counsel services, including intake and assessment of clients, procedural and summary legal advice, and representation in court.
  • Assist unrepresented clients with Child Youth and Family Services Act (CYFSA) matters, including document preparation and in-court appearances.
  • Advocate for clients in court and on court forms, ensuring high-quality legal work in a cost-effective manner.
  • Maintain client files and conflict lists, recording data and producing reports as required.
Requirements:
  • Member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience of relevant family law legislation, particularly child protection law, and in-court experience in both family and child protection matters.
  • Client-focused with sound judgment and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to communicate with accuracy and fluency in both English and French.
Preferred Skills and Experience:
  • Sound knowledge of Legal Aid Ontario's operations and mandate.
  • Prior family and CYFSA law experience.
  • Demonstrated interest in Aboriginal legal issues.
