Position Overview

The University of Waterloo is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Conflict Management Director to provide strategic leadership and guidance to the campus community. This senior position is accountable for providing conflict management expertise and for providing strategic leadership over the Conflict Management Office (CMO).

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for leading the development, management, rationalization, and assessment of the CMO and its programs and functions. This includes ensuring the operation of the unit meets and follows all critical elements within the conflict and complaint management process and adheres to the Ontario Human Rights Code, the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act, and other relevant statutory obligations.

Expertise and Guidance

The Conflict Management Director will use subject matter expertise to provide strategic guidance to the campus, particularly senior leaders, on appropriately managing complex, multi-faceted complaint/conflict-related matters in a timely manner. This includes assisting leaders in understanding and applying our statutory obligations to the complaint management process and related decisions.

Human Resource Management

The successful candidate will be responsible for the overall management of the Conflict Management team of specialized professionals, including hiring, coaching, staff performance management, professional development, salary administration, priority setting, and ensuring the effective delivery and assessment of services.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess a Master's degree in a related field, such as Law, Psychology, or Sociology, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The successful candidate will also have direct management experience, demonstrated leadership in strategic and tactical thinking, and the ability to interpret and apply the Ontario Human Rights Code and related statutes.

Additional Requirements

The Conflict Management Director will be required to have experience investigating allegations of harassment, discrimination, and/or sexual/gender-based violence within a university context, as well as experience assessing complex cases to identify institutional risks related to upholding statutory obligations. The successful candidate will also be required to have excellent interpersonal and listening skills, as well as the ability to negotiate and mediate between diverse stakeholders with conflicting viewpoints.
