Job Summary
The HSE Business Partner will be responsible for managing the HSE function across the organization, ensuring effective risk management, regulatory compliance, and proactive management strategies. This role will champion the implementation and support of HSE programs and policies.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, lead, and coach employees through effective training and communication.
- Ensure plant compliance with corporate policies and legislative requirements.
- Provide a highly visible presence in the plant by the safety team and ensure that safety and compliance issues are addressed.
- Develop, implement, and provide technical support for environment, health, and safety policy, programs, and procedures.
- Ensure plant compliance with corporate policies and legislative requirements.
- Seek continuous improvement to safety by conducting regular inspections, hazard analysis, audits, and implementing required action plans.
- Ensure roles and responsibilities are clearly defined, understood, and acted upon by departmental managers, supervisors, Joint Health & Safety Committee members, and all employees.
- Develop and maintain working relationships across the business in the development of comprehensive HSE controls and ensure site HSE systems are kept operational.
- Recommend novel approaches within guidelines across all divisions for the design, construction, and operating characteristics of facilities and equipment within the organization to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and industry standards.
- Provide technical support to advise on HSE risks associated with these projects.
- Keep informed on research and development in the area of HSE technologies and trends, and purchase/recommend the purchase of material, equipment, and technologies to support operational needs.
- Provide regular and ad hoc reports as well as maintain data regarding activities, opportunities, and trends, and make recommendations to correct program non-compliances.
- Make recommendations for prioritizing annual budgetary expenditures for HSE projects based on risk assessment outcomes and corporate business plans.
- Review submitted incident investigations and provide feedback to staff and management, recommending corrective actions to facilitate a safe workplace and ensure legal compliance within the geographic area.
- Manage and direct environmental reclamation, remediation, and restoration measures as appropriate.
- Develop, deliver, train, and coach staff on HSE policy, programs, and procedures, including guidelines for specific issues and best practices to facilitate consistent understanding of regulations, industry standards, and potential liabilities.
- Conduct research into respective regulatory requirements and industry standards to ensure that all regulatory factors are understood and considered in assessing current and future business opportunities/issues.
- Provide input and monitor the design, construction, and operating characteristics of facilities and equipment to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and industry standards.
- Create an environment that fosters teamwork and continuous improvement.
- Contribute to the development of ongoing long-term corporate HSE strategic objectives, programs, and guidelines and performance measures.
- Provide emergency response technical support and assist with the development, implementation, and ongoing support of emergency response capabilities.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 5 years progressive experience working in an HSE function.
- Post-secondary education and Health & Safety certification or working towards CRSP or equivalent.
- Proven experience with safety program development, implementation, and training.
- Strong business acumen, understanding cost and opportunity management.
- Excellent judgment and superior problem-solving skills within the scope of duties.
- Knowledge of the Health and Safety Act, provincial regulations, and WSIB policy.
- Direct working experience in a manufacturing environment.
- Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office products.
- Previous experience with inventory control, ERP, and WMS systems preferred.
- Relationship management experience with regulatory agencies preferred.
- Understanding of HACCP rules, regulations, and procedures.
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to coordinate and work well with various departments and locations.
- Proficiency in English Language.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Good financial and business awareness.
- Strong written and verbal skills to communicate with all levels of the organization and its executive team.
- Strong quantitative and critical thinking skills.
