About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Mental Health and Substance Use Intake Screener to join our team at the Okanagan Correctional Centre. As a key member of our Behavioral Health Services team, you will play a critical role in providing high-quality care to individuals with complex mental health and substance use challenges.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive screening services to newly admitted clients, assessing their mental health and substance use needs and prioritizing referrals in collaboration with the Health Care Manager and BC Corrections officials.
  • Utilize evidence-based tools to assess and address mental health and substance use concerns, ensuring a trauma-informed approach that respects the diversity of our clients.
  • Initiate follow-up care and treatment for clients with identified mental health and/or substance use concerns, referring them to interdisciplinary team members for comprehensive assessment and support.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate documentation, including admission histories, progress notes, and risk assessments, to inform treatment planning and decision-making.
  • Participate in clinical meetings and present new clients to the treatment team, providing input on strategies to support their care and well-being.
  • Collaborate with other team members to develop and implement care plans, ensuring a comprehensive and coordinated approach to addressing client needs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Social Work or a related allied health discipline.
  • Two years of recent experience in a mental health and/or substance use care setting, working with offenders, forensic mental health patients, and/or in secure healthcare settings.
  • Knowledge of major mental illnesses, substance use, and concurrent disorders, as well as the ability to problem-solve, adjust to new situations, and manage conflict effectively.
  • Awareness of and commitment to learning about the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's 94 Calls to Action, the In Plain Sight Report, and other related reports, and a commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting reconciliation in Canada.
