Your Role as a Residential Child and Youth Care Specialist

As a Residential Child and Youth Care Specialist, you will play a vital role in the lives of children and youth within our residential care program. You will be responsible for their well-being, development, and overall success.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Individualized Support: Participate in assessing the needs of each individual, setting goals, and evaluating their progress. Provide tailored support to help them achieve their full potential.
  • Positive Social Development: Facilitate positive social interactions through daily routines, activities, and structured programs. Guide individuals in developing healthy relationships and communication skills.
  • Safety and Well-being: Ensure the safety and well-being of all individuals under your care. Implement practices that promote a secure and supportive environment.
  • Behavioral Support: Provide one-on-one and group counseling to address behavioral challenges. Teach coping mechanisms, adaptive behaviors, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Emotional Support: Offer compassionate emotional support and crisis intervention when needed. Utilize non-violent physical interventions as a last resort, always prioritizing the safety and well-being of individuals.
  • Collaboration and Communication: Maintain open communication with families, schools, community partners, and internal teams to ensure a coordinated approach to care.
  • Practical Assistance: Assist with daily living activities, such as personal hygiene, meal preparation, and household chores.
  • Medication Administration: Administer medications according to established protocols and guidelines.
  • Documentation and Reporting: Maintain accurate records, including statistics, logbooks, and daily activity reports.
  • Transportation: Safely operate a vehicle to transport individuals to appointments, outings, and other destinations as required.
Ideal Candidate Profile:

We are seeking compassionate and dedicated individuals who possess the following qualifications:

  • A Child and Youth Care Degree or Diploma, or a related degree in humanities, social work, or a similar field.
  • Minimum of two years of recent experience working with children and youth in a care setting, emergency shelter, or a relevant combination of education and experience.
  • Experience implementing trauma-informed practices.
  • A valid Class 5 BC Driver's License and a clean driver's abstract.
Additional Requirements:

Successful candidates will be required to obtain the following certifications:

  • CPR/First Aid, WHMIS, and Food Hygiene and Sanitation certificates.
  • Non-Violent Physical Crisis Intervention (NVCI) or MANDT and Conflict Resolution Certificate.
  • Physician's note confirming suitability, including immunization records and a negative tuberculosis screening test.
