The Academic Chair of the Nursing Studies Department at Algonquin College is responsible for providing academic leadership in the management and administration of faculty, support staff, and students. The successful candidate will be responsible for establishing a strategic direction for the Department that aligns with the College's strategic plan and Faculty goals.

Key Responsibilities:

Provides Academic Leadership:

  • Collaborates with the Dean to establish the Department's strategic direction, aligning with the College's plan and deploying resources accordingly.
  • Leads the development and implementation of new academic programs, ensuring they reflect current technology, economic trends, and market influences.
  • Builds partnerships with external communities, school boards, academic agencies, and universities to advance the Faculty's vision and mission.
  • Promotes scholarly research and simulation-based learning, ensuring programs meet national and professional accreditation standards.
  • Assesses and responds to student needs, provides leadership in diverse health forums, and ensures effective supervision of teaching and learning processes.

Responsible for Human Resources Management and Development:

  • Facilitates communication between faculty and support staff, fostering collaboration to support departmental and college objectives.
  • Directs teaching activities, recruits and develops faculty and staff, and promotes their ongoing professional development.
  • Conducts investigations, resolves disputes, and advises students, referring them to appropriate resources.
  • Recommends full-time faculty and support staff appointments to the Dean and hires part-time and temporary staff.

Participates in Program Evaluation, Partnerships, and Marketing Promotions:

  • Provides academic leadership in curriculum review and ensures adherence to program quality assurance processes.
  • Implements initiatives from College and Government authorities, including strategic plans and essential employability skills.
  • Establishes learning outcomes for programs in accordance with College and Ministry policies and external agencies.
  • Builds relationships with industry representatives, advisory committee members, professional associations, and participates in student recruitment and graduate placement initiatives.

Requirements:

  • Minimum of a Master's Degree in Health Discipline; Health Administration or related fields required; PhD preferred.
  • Current College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) RN registration with no restrictions.
  • Minimum of nine (9) years related experience in increasingly responsible roles, including a minimum of two (2) years spent in a supervisory/management role.
  • Demonstrated strong background in education/training through either prior teaching, curriculum development, and/or educational consultancy.
  • Demonstrated understanding and commitment to student success, teaching excellence, quality education, and experiential learning, preferably within a post-secondary environment.
  • Demonstrated management style which nurtures individual initiative and creativity, within the context of organizational goals.
  • Strong communications, leadership, and interpersonal skills that make you a consensus builder, who can articulate an academic vision and execute on plans.
  • Excellent group facilitation and conflict resolution skills.
  • Demonstrated superior organizational, planning, and financial management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage the external community and develop partnership linkages.
