Department Head Assistant

Vancouver Community College is seeking a highly skilled and experienced individual to fill the position of Assistant Department Head in the English as an Additional Language department.
Key Responsibilities- Program Curriculum and Instruction
- Anticipate and inform the Department Head of faculty needs and changes within the program area.
- Participate in the effective supervision of departmental activities as assigned by the Department Head.
- Coordinate course assignments and related duties and responsibilities for each member in the area.
- Assist in course, program, faculty scheduling matters as requested by the Department Head.
- Arrange a teaching schedule that balances instructional and administrative responsibilities.
- Faculty, Staff and Student Relations
- Act as the principal liaison between faculty members in the area and the Department Head.
- Maintain liaison with other Assistant Department Heads in the department to interpret points of view, problems, and practices.
- Convene meetings of faculty members within the area on a regular basis.
- Assist the Department Head in keeping members of the area informed on campus developments.
- Establish committees and delegate duties and responsibilities within the area as needed.
- Planning and Development
- Assist the Department Head in the coordinated administration of programs of professional growth for the faculty.
- Participate in attempting to place graduates.
- Maintain and improve the adequacy of buildings, rooms, equipment, stores, etc., relative to the area of responsibility.
- Advise and assist in program and facilities planning.
- Aid in the development of course and curriculum materials.
- Administration
- Act as and carry out the duties and responsibilities of the Department Head in their absence if designated.
- Recommend desired changes in courses and/or programs to the Department Head.
- Ensure representatives attend standing articulation committee meetings.
- Ensure representatives attend Program Advisory Committee meetings.
- Assist the Department Head in preparing budgetary requirements for the program area.
- Prepare an annual report on the growth, development, activities, and future of the area.
- Bachelor's degree.
- Formal recognized English as a Second Language (ESL) / English as a Foreign Language (EFL) training, including a supervised practicum.
- Minimum sixteen hundred hours of ESL/EFL teaching experience within the past five (5) years, including experience with adult learners and native or near-native fluency and accuracy in both spoken and written English.
- Applicants may be requested to write the VCC English Language Assessment, with a required total score of 160.
