About the Role
The University of Waterloo is seeking a highly skilled Senior Laboratory Operations Manager to oversee the day-to-day facility operations, including supervision and training of laboratory technical and research staff, and graduate and undergraduate students. This role will ensure optimal and safe operation of the four research laboratory areas: Microwave Laboratory, Terahertz Laboratory, Electromagnetic Radiation Laboratory, and Rapid Prototyping Laboratory.
Responsibilities
- Manage laboratory equipment, ensuring functionality and user safety by overseeing maintenance, troubleshooting, and the installation of new equipment and facilities.
- Develop and implement efficient equipment usage systems, scheduling, and tracking.
- Provide technical support for research projects (internal and industrial users) and assist with special projects.
- Collaborate with faculty and users on research needs and schedules instrument usage for optimal resource allocation.
- Maintain inventory of supplies specific to each lab and source equipment and materials as needed.
- Develop and enforce equipment operating procedures based on best practices and safety protocols.
- Oversee proper waste disposal of chemicals and hazardous materials.
- Coordinate lab finances in collaboration with the departmental Financial Coordinators.
- Identify and recommend facility upgrades, obtain cost estimates, and implement approved improvements.
- Evaluate new chemicals/materials and equipment for risk management.
- Ensure cost-effective lab operation by balancing expenses with user charges.
Requirements
- Masters Degree or higher in an Applied Science field; Bachelor's degree with relevant experience may be considered.
- 3+ years of experience in a research and development environment.
- Proven ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
- Experience monitoring and enforcing safety in labs or similar environments is required.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills to ensure smooth functioning of the lab.
- Intermediate computer skills and proficiency in software applications used in office/lab settings.
Benefits and Other Information
This role offers an estimated salary of $95,000 - $110,000 per year, depending on qualifications and experience. The position involves managing laboratory operations, supervising staff, and maintaining safety protocols.
