Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Psychiatric Assessment Nurse to join our team at Providence Health Care. As a key member of our interdisciplinary team, you will play a critical role in providing high-quality patient care and contributing to the development of our mental health services.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide expert psychiatric assessment and care to patients presenting with mental health and/or substance use issues.
  • Collaborate with emergency physicians, psychiatrists, and other healthcare professionals to develop and implement comprehensive care plans.
  • Conduct thorough assessments, crisis interventions, and stabilization of patients, ensuring a safe and respectful environment.
  • Work closely with the Emergency Clinical Nurse Leader, Mental Health Program, and Interdisciplinary teams to ensure seamless patient care and flow.
  • Participate in rounds/clinics and contribute to the assessment of patient problems and needs, planning and prioritizing of nursing interventions, and implementing and evaluating interventions.
  • Act as a clinical resource to nursing staff, students, and other team members, providing guidance and support in clinical practice issues, problem-solving, and troubleshooting concerns.
  • Collaborate with nursing staff to determine needs for consultation with Physicians, Nurse Consultants, and other disciplines or departments, arranging for consultation when required.
  • Advocate for patients and families, communicating concerns and intervening as necessary.
  • Perform direct nursing care, assuming responsibility for a patient assignment and providing input into the development, evaluation, and delivery of orientation programs.
  • Collaborate with the Operations Leader and nursing staff to identify specific learning needs of nurses and implement educational strategies and programs, presenting in-service educational sessions as required.
  • Assist in promoting further education, mentoring staff regarding educational opportunities, and assisting with interpersonal conflict resolution and the development of clinical nursing skills.
  • Provide input to the Operations Leader regarding Performance Planning and Coaching of unit staff, acting as a clinical resource to unit staff in the Performance Planning and Coaching process.
  • Assist in identifying researchable clinical patient care management problems, participating in research initiatives and projects related to patient care and/or nursing practices, disseminating findings, and assisting in applying and implementing research findings into practice.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary care team members regarding quality improvement initiatives, making recommendations for QI projects, implementing processes and procedures upon authorization, and evaluating results.
Requirements
  • Registration with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing RN/RPN registrant.
  • Qualifications required of staff nurse in clinical area, plus three years of recent related experience in clinical specialty, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Ability to supervise, deal with and promote change, role model conflict resolution strategies, communicate effectively, apply decision-making and analytical skills, deal with others effectively, and organize and prioritize work.
  • Ability to operate related equipment, teach, coach, and provide clinical supervision, collaborate with other members of an interdisciplinary team, match skills of staff with clinical needs, and perform other related duties as assigned.
