Rail Track Maintenance Job Summary
As a vital member of our team, you will be responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient transportation of goods and passengers across our rail network. We are seeking a skilled and experienced Rail Track Maintainer to join our crew.

Main Responsibilities:
Our Rail Track Maintainer will be responsible for inspecting, repairing, and replacing rails, ties, switches, and ballasts. This will involve working outdoors in a variety of weather conditions and ensuring a safe working environment. Key duties will include:

  • Maintaining CN's train rails, ties, switches, and ballasts through inspection, repair, and replacement
  • Maintaining various hand tools for assigned work
  • Removal and replacement of defective ties, rails spikes, and anchors
  • Repairing deviations in track surface, alignment, and gauge
  • Installation and repair of street and railroad crossings and assisting in the replacement or repair of items such as power-operated switches and insulated joints
  • Unloading ballasts and distributing track material
  • Sifting used track material for loading
  • Ensuring railroad right-of-way is clear of brush, vegetation, snow, and litter
  • Maintaining a safe working environment by following CN's safety policies and procedures

Working Conditions:
This role will require shift work, including occasional overtime when necessary. Long periods of travel may be required, including overnight stays. The work will be primarily performed outdoors in various types of weather and environmental conditions. Physical demands will include repetitive activity, lifting, and carrying up to 50 pounds frequently, and up to 70 pounds occasionally.

Requirements:
To be successful in this role, you will require relevant work experience in similar working conditions or regulatory and safety environments. Experience operating heavy equipment and machinery is also essential. A valid driver's license is required, as is the ability to meet all medical fitness for duty requirements for the position. You will also need to demonstrate good teamwork and communication skills, as well as the ability to work autonomously and adapt to different situations. Welding skills and knowledge of signals or Railroad Operating Rules are considered assets.

Training:
New hires will receive classroom training over a period of 4 weeks at 40 hours per week. The training will cover health and safety rules and basic machine operator procedures. Successful completion of the classroom training is mandatory for this role. This position is a unionized position, and pay and benefits will be governed by the applicable collective agreement.
