Job Summary

We are seeking a dedicated and passionate Indigenous Justice Lawyer to join our team at Collage HR. As a Staff Lawyer, you will play a crucial role in advocating for the rights of Indigenous clients facing criminal charges and child protection matters.

About the Position

The successful candidate will have 1-5 years of litigation experience in criminal defence, with a strong understanding of the Canadian justice system and its procedures. Knowledge of local and urban Indigenous cultures is essential, as well as the ability to provide a culturally safe environment for clients.

This is a full-time position (35 hours/week), Monday to Friday, with a salary range of $90,000 - $150,000, commensurate with education and experience. We offer an extended benefits package, including health and dental, personal days, paid vacation, and RRSP/TFSA savings plans.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide legal representation for criminal and child protection matters to Indigenous clients who would not otherwise have access to legal representation.
  • Advocate on behalf of clients for diversion from the formal court system to less intrusive measures, including Indigenous intervention protocols and alternative dispute resolution processes.
  • Work closely with the Resource and Support Worker to provide wrap-around services that meet the needs of clients.
  • Develop and maintain working relationships with Indigenous communities and service providers, probation, diversion, crown counsel, and other agencies.
  • Maintain documentation and comprehensive client files.
  • Compile and submit statistical data where required.
Qualifications and Requirements
  • Membership in a Canadian Law Society, preferably British Columbia.
  • J.D. considered an asset.
  • Strong knowledge of the structure and procedures of Canada's Criminal Justice System, including the Criminal Code, Youth Criminal Justice Act, Gladue principles, and case law.
  • Knowledge of local agencies offering indigenous/restorative justice services and support services to offenders and children/youth/families.
  • Self-motivated individual with the ability to work with minimal supervision in a team-oriented setting.
  • Valid Driver's License and ability to travel.

Reporting and Hours

This position reports to the Provincial Director of the Indigenous Justice Centres. The regular working hours are Monday to Friday, 35 hours per week.
