Director, Data and Analytics

About the Role

The Director, Data and Analytics is a key leadership position responsible for providing strategic direction and oversight to the development and operation of data and analytics services at BC Cancer. This role requires a strong leader who can coordinate interdivisional data initiatives, act as a professional lead for statisticians, business analysts, and surveillance staff, and ensure compliance with legislation and regulations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and guidance in the design, implementation, and operation of data and analytics services that support the needs of BC Cancer.
  • Create new data-driven approaches for generating business insights through data analytics, information visualization, and addressing unanswered business issues in a proactive manner.
  • Develop and deliver advanced statistical analysis and modeling that sets the context for the future implementation of cognitive science within BC Cancer.
  • Evaluate and make recommendations on open source analytical packages that are in alignment with PHSA BC Cancer practice standards.
  • Formulate, implement, and evaluate strategic planning for data and analytics services by leading the analysis of the current situation and the future requirements of the area.
  • Establish privacy and security policies and procedures for appropriate access to and sharing of health information at BC Cancer and with PHSA Performance Measurement & Reporting, the BC Ministry of Health, and other relevant external partners.
  • Develop and maintain a human resources plan that supports the goals and objectives of BC Cancer and provides the highest level of quality service to clients.
  • Develop and monitor an annual budget for the Data and Analytics function by monitoring budget performance, planning and adjusting operations and/or staffing to meet projections and annual targets.

Requirements

  • A Master's degree in epidemiology, public health, or a related discipline, with additional special training in cancer surveillance or informatics, and a minimum of ten (10) years of progressively more responsible analytics/informatics experience in a comparable role.
  • Leadership and managerial skills in a large diverse environment.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to facilitate, negotiate, and persuade others.
  • Ability to build and maintain effective relationships.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to respond to the needs of stakeholders supported by an acute awareness of the impact of action.
  • Demonstrate ability to problem-solve with a global perspective in order to incorporate the organization's systems and strategies when developing viable solutions to problems.
  • Ability to establish courses of action for self and others that are results-oriented.
  • Project management experience with multi-faceted projects and stringent timelines.
  • Understanding of various reports, including Truth & Reconciliation Commission's 94 Calls to Action (2015), In Plain Sight Report (2020), BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019), In Plain Sight, Reclaiming Power and Place Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls calls for justice, and how they intersect across the health care system.
  • Model and support full team commitment to Indigenous Cultural Safety and anti-racism.
  • Demonstrate humility and heart-led leadership.
  • Commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per TRC and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act.
  • Knowledge of social, economic, political, and historical realities impacting indigenous communities and familiarity with Indigenous Cultural Safety and anti-racism and accompanying reports (BC DRIPA, TRC, etc.).

Salary Range: $116,591 - $167,600 per year. The starting salary for this position would be determined with consideration of the successful candidate's relevant education and experience and would be in alignment with the provincial compensation reference plan. Salary will be prorated accordingly for part-time roles.

Location: 686 West Broadway, Vancouver BC, V5Z 1G1
