We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Principal Developer to join our team at Hootsuite Inc. as a key member of our software development organization.

This is a unique opportunity to drive the advancement of our product's architecture, reliability, performance, and security, while working on complex technical problems across our entire software stack.

As a Principal Developer, you will be responsible for providing technical guidance and leadership through the design, implementation, and delivery of large technical projects that cross-cut teams and products.

You will participate in the Technical Architecture Group to deliver a long-term, unified architecture that delivers on the objectives of the Product and Technology visions.

Additionally, you will provide technical advice, act as a role model for the Software Development department, execute complicated plans, and navigate many levels of the organization.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing technical guidance and leadership through the design, implementation, and delivery of large technical projects
  • Participating in the Technical Architecture Group to deliver a long-term, unified architecture
  • Providing technical advice and acting as a role model for the Software Development department
  • Executing complicated plans and navigating many levels of the organization
  • Coaching and mentoring Senior and Staff Developers across Hootsuite to grow the capacity and experience of the team
  • Conducting directed research and technical analysis of new candidate technologies that fill a development team's business or technical need
  • Contributing to, defining, and tracking project-level work on large technical projects while ensuring visibility to the team
  • Contributing enhancements to development, build, deployment, and monitoring processes with an emphasis on security, reliability, and performance
  • Collaborating with the Software Development Leadership Team to ensure that the software architecture is considered in all major decisions

Requirements include:

  • Advanced level of related experience
  • Experience leading the design and implementation of the long-term architecture within a large service-oriented product organization
  • Deep technical expertise in the continuous delivery of web and mobile software
  • Master-level understanding of software reliability, performance, and security
  • Experience driving large changes across a service-oriented architecture
  • Effective collaboration on business problems with peers across the organization, including Product, Design, Ops, Program Management, etc.
  • Ability to connect long-term technical opportunities to business needs
  • Experience with mentoring, coaching, and pairing with senior individual contributors
  • Ability to collaboratively plan, articulate, and gain organizational alignment and commitment on a technical vision
  • Demonstrates a desire to proactively help and serve internal and external customers meet their needs
  • Clearly conveys thoughts, both written and verbally, listening attentively and asking questions for clarification and understanding
  • Ability to recognize and communicate broad technical issues and contribute ideas on how to resolve them

  • Ability to stay on top of technical direction/frameworks beyond Hootsuite and advocate for their adoption at Hootsuite
