Job Summary

We are seeking a dedicated and passionate Primary Teacher to join our team at the York Region District School Board. As a Primary Teacher, you will be responsible for creating a supportive and inclusive learning environment for students in Grade 1 or 2.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement engaging lesson plans that cater to diverse learning styles and abilities
  • Build strong relationships with students, parents, and colleagues to ensure a collaborative and supportive school community
  • Stay up-to-date with curriculum developments and best practices in primary education
  • Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance teaching skills and knowledge
  • Collaborate with colleagues to plan and implement school-wide initiatives and programs
Requirements
  • Bachelor of Education with specialization in primary/elementary education
  • Teaching experience in a Grade 1 or 2 classroom is an asset
  • Training and experience teaching with a Structured Literacy/Science of Reading approach to literacy is an asset
  • Experience working with First Nation students and communities is an asset

  • Desire and passion to work collaboratively and maintain an authentic relationship with the Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation people, community members, community Elders, and families
  • Eagerness to learn about and integrate Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation culture and worldview, and the Gwich'in language in the classroom
  • Keenness to live, work, and participate as an active member of the Old Crow community
  • Demonstrated ability to incorporate outdoor-experiential/land-based learning in teaching practice
  • Solid understanding of a philosophy of inclusive education
  • Demonstrated ability to implement Student Support Plans, Behaviour Plans, Safety Plans, and Individual Education Plans
  • Experience integrating self-regulation and social-emotional care practices in the classroom
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and collaborative skills working with parents, staff members, coaches, the First Nation School Board, and other partners
  • Knowledge of, and the ability to implement, developmentally responsive approaches
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with parents and caregivers, establishing cooperative and authentic connections to support the best school experience possible
Additional Information

To be a Teacher in Yukon, you must hold a Teacher Certification in another Canadian province/territory first. Successful applicants will be required to undergo a Criminal Record Check, including a Vulnerable Sector Check.

Relocation may be available. In communities outside of Whitehorse, there may be affordable though modest rental accommodation provided by Yukon Housing Corporation. Private accommodation is limited. If not available, candidates will need to find their own private accommodation, with assistance where possible from the First Nation School Board.
