Qualifications and Experience
We are seeking a highly qualified and experienced Primary Education Specialist to join our team at York Region District School Board. The successful candidate will possess a Bachelor of Education with specialization in primary/elementary education and have teaching experience in a Grade 1 or 2 classroom.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement Structured Literacy/Science of Reading approach to literacy in the classroom
- Work collaboratively with First Nation students and communities to promote greater community involvement in school-based activities and educational programming
- Integrate Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation culture and worldview, and the Gwich'in language in the classroom
- Implement Student Support Plans, Behaviour Plans, Safety Plans, and Individual Education Plans
- Develop and implement self-regulation and social-emotional care practices in the classroom
- Communicate effectively with parents and caregivers to establish cooperative and authentic connections
Requirements
- Bachelor of Education with specialization in primary/elementary education
- Teaching experience in a Grade 1 or 2 classroom
- Training and experience teaching with a Structured Literacy/Science of Reading approach to literacy
- Experience working with First Nation students and communities
Desired Skills and Qualities
- Desire and passion to work collaboratively and maintain an authentic relationship with the Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation people, community members, community Elders, and families
- Eagerness to learn about and integrate Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation culture and worldview, and the Gwich'in language in the classroom
- Keenness to live, work, and participate as an active member of the community
- Demonstrated ability to incorporate outdoor-experiential/land-based learning in teaching practice
- Solid understanding of a philosophy of inclusive education
