Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor of Education or equivalent
  • Proven experience in a primary education setting (Grades K-4)
  • Familiarity with and experience in early childhood educational methodologies is advantageous
  • Background in teaching within a multigrade classroom is beneficial
  • Experience in incorporating self-regulation and social-emotional support strategies in the learning environment is valuable
  • Experience engaging with Indigenous students in a culturally rich community is a plus

Desired Knowledge, Skills and Suitability
Candidates should possess and may be evaluated on their:

  • Enthusiasm for learning about and integrating Liard First Nation (Kaska Dene) culture and worldview, as well as the Dene zagi (Kaska language) into the curriculum
  • Ability to collaborate effectively and build authentic relationships with the Liard First Nation government, Daylu Dena Council Educational Support Workers (ESW), community Elders, and families
  • Commitment to living, working, and engaging as an active member of the Watson Lake community
  • Strong skills in classroom management, planning, and organization, with the capacity to inspire students
  • Comprehensive understanding of inclusive education philosophy, along with excellent interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills when working with parents, colleagues, coaches, the First Nation School Board, and other stakeholders
  • Demonstrated ability to apply restorative practices and positive behavioral interventions and supports
  • Proven capability to design, implement, and assess project-based learning to enhance curriculum outcomes
  • Solid understanding and experience in executing on-the-land curriculum
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply science of reading methodologies to literacy instruction
  • Demonstrated proficiency in developing, supporting, and executing Student Learning Plans, Behavior Plans, Safety Plans, and Individual Education Plans
  • Knowledge of and ability to implement developmentally appropriate practices
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively with parents and caregivers, fostering cooperative and genuine connections to ensure the best educational experience
  • Passion for cultivating and maintaining strong, respectful relationships and trust with students, their families, and the broader community

Additional Information

  • To qualify as a Teacher in Yukon, candidates must first hold a Teacher Certification from another Canadian province or territory
  • Successful candidates will be required to complete a Criminal Record Check, including a Vulnerable Sector Check
