Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Duty Counselor to join our team at Legal Aid Ontario. As a key member of our family law unit, you will provide essential legal services to clients in need.

About the Role

The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering high-quality legal advice and representation to clients in family law matters. This will include providing instructions to Legal Aid Workers, preparation of court documents, making referrals when required, and advocating for clients in court.

Main Responsibilities

  • Provide family law duty counsel services, including in-person and virtual consultations.
  • Represent clients in the Superior Court of Justice (Unified Family Court) at first appearances, conferences, motions, negotiations, and other court hearings.
  • Advocate for clients in court and on court forms.
  • Assist unrepresented clients with Child Youth and Family Services Act (CYFSA) matters.
  • Provide advice lawyer services at the Family Law Information Center (FLIC) and other advice clinics.
  • Ensure high-quality legal work is delivered in a cost-effective manner.
  • Maintain client files and conflict lists.

Requirements

  • Member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience of relevant family law legislation, particularly child protection law, and in-court experience in both family and child protection matters.
  • Client-focused with sound judgment and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both English and French.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and stakeholders.

What We Offer

A competitive salary of $83,343 - $142,422 per year, plus benefits and opportunities for professional growth and development.
