Ottawa, Ontario, Canada First Nations Financial Management Board Full time

Key Responsibilities

The Legal Counsel will provide expert legal advice to the Director, Indigenous Engagement, Laws & Relations, and the First Nations Financial Management Board. This includes reviewing and revising Financial Administration Laws and Bylaws, as well as providing guidance on the Indian Act and modern-day treaties.

Key Accountabilities

  • Provide input into the Board's policies and procedures;
  • Review and revise Financial Administration Laws and Bylaws;
  • Conduct informal and formal reviews of Financial Administration Laws and Bylaws;
  • Provide expert advice on the Indian Act and modern-day treaties;
  • Collaborate with the Director, Standards, and Director, Certifications to review and recommend changes to Financial Administration Law and Bylaw Standards and templates;
  • Collaborate with the Director, IELR, General Counsel, and Senior Leadership Team to ensure the provision of consistent documents, opinions, and processes;
  • Develop and implement training programs for the Paralegal and other staff on legal policies, processes, procedures, and operational support services;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or Juris Doctor (JD) degree;
  • Member in good standing with the Law Society of their province or eligibility to transfer from another Canadian jurisdiction;
  • Minimum 5 years' experience in a law firm or in-house counsel for a First Nations association, working with Federal Government organizations and representatives, and working with Indigenous Governments, organizations, and communities;
  • Understanding, awareness, and appreciation of Indigenous culture and history;
  • Fluency in English and French (spoken and written), with fluency in an Indigenous language considered an asset.
