Commercial Law Advisor for Indigenous Affairs

About the Role
As a Commercial Law Advisor for Indigenous Affairs at the First Nations Financial Management Board, you will play a vital role in providing expert legal guidance and support to clients and staff on various matters related to financial administration laws and bylaws. You will work closely with stakeholders, including clients, external counsel, government agencies, and other organizations to ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations.
Main Responsibilities
- Provide input into the development of policies, procedures, and strategic plans that align with the organization's goals and objectives;
- Explain complex legal concepts to non-legal audiences and conduct internal training sessions on legal policies and procedures;
- Conduct formal reviews of financial administration laws and bylaws to ensure they meet the required standards and procedures;
- Collaborate with the Director, Indigenous Engagement, Laws & Relations, General Counsel, and Senior Leadership Team to ensure consistent documents, opinions, and processes;
- Liaise directly with clients and their legal counsel when required, and collaborate with other teams to manage the informal review of financial administration laws and bylaws;
- Draft agreements, contracts, and policies, and make recommendations as necessary;
- Assist with representation of the FMB in legal consultations involving proposed revisions to the First Nations Fiscal Management Act and other relevant legislation;
- Prepare SAC and Board resolutions and materials, including legal opinions and advice to the Board on issuing compliance approvals of new financial administration laws;
- Support clients to achieve Financial Management System (FMS) Certification, providing operational support and guidance on drafting and execution of legal documents, such as Council Resolutions and updated financial administration laws;
- Perform other duties as assigned, including filing and reporting in CRM and HPE for client tracking.
Requirements
- Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or Juris Doctor (JD) degree from a recognized institution;
- Practicing member in good standing with the Law Society of your province or eligibility to transfer from another Canadian jurisdiction;
- At least 3 years of experience in a law firm or in-house counsel for a First Nations association, working with Federal Government organizations and representatives, and Indigenous Governments, organizations, and communities;
- Fluency in English and French (spoken and written); fluency in an Indigenous language is considered an asset;
- Ability to adapt to various competing demands and high work volumes in a fast-paced environment;
- Remote/Hybrid work arrangement eligibility.
Salary Range
$80,000 - $120,000 per annum, depending on experience.
