Job Summary

Lightspeed is seeking an experienced Commercial Counsel to join our legal team. As a key member of our commercial legal team, you will play a vital role in supporting the leadership of our commercial legal function.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage a portion of the commercial legal team and contribute to the leadership of our growing legal department.
  • Support the ownership of the commercial contracting process, including contracting with customers, partners, and vendors.
  • Implement systems and processes to enhance the scalability and efficiency of our commercial legal function.
  • Provide support on complex, cross-functional projects and engage in ad hoc analysis for various stakeholder groups.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to stakeholders, including Procurement, Finance, Sales, Marketing, People & Culture, Product Development, Technology, and Information Security and Information Technology teams.
  • Develop, draft, revise, administer, implement, and interpret compliance policies, procedures, and programs.
  • Use sound legal and business judgment to make recommendations and solve legal and business problems, often within tight deadlines.
  • Liaise with regulatory bodies and government authorities as required.
  • Engage and empower colleagues and stakeholder groups through training and thought leadership.
  • Assist in managing outside counsel engagements.
  • Work on ad hoc projects as assigned.
  • Assist with special requests from the executive team.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in a law firm and/or as in-house counsel, preferably with a software-as-a-service business.
  • Extensive experience drafting, reviewing, and negotiating all types of contracts, especially technology contracts.
  • Strong leadership skills and experience managing legal teams.
  • Creative problem-solving and an innovative approach to in-house law department management.
  • Broad commercial and corporate transactional experience gained in a fast-paced, preferably international, environment.
  • Professional-level proficiency in English, including legal writing.
  • Knowledge of and experience with GDPR, CCPA, and other cybersecurity matters, PCI compliance, and the payment card industry.
  • Comfortable communicating with colleagues and stakeholders at different levels and with different professional backgrounds.
