Job Summary

The Commonwealth of Virginia seeks a highly skilled Benefits Program Specialist III to join our team. This advanced-level position requires significant knowledge of public assistance programs, including fraud and quality control case review.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct initial and ongoing eligibility determinations, utilizing advanced program knowledge to ensure accuracy and uniformity.
  • Provide quality control by examining cases completed by other eligibility workers, identifying errors and making recommendations for improvement.
  • Manage complex cases, utilizing sound judgment and discretion to draw logical conclusions and make informed decisions.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with applicants, recipients, and other stakeholders, including public and private agencies.
  • Prepare reports and provide statistical data to support budget requests, identifying trends and areas for improvement.
  • Participate in strategic planning, mentoring, and training, sharing knowledge and expertise with colleagues.
  • Stay up-to-date with changes in public policies and regulations, applying this knowledge to make informed decisions and provide guidance to others.
Requirements
  • Considerable knowledge of applicable laws, codes, policies, and procedures related to public assistance programs.
  • Ability to manage complex cases, read and interpret public policies and regulations, and train staff.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in operating a personal computer and associated software, with the ability to use various types of automated technology to establish and maintain case records.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Additional related work experience in benefit programs or equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Ability to speak in public, promoting agency programs and developing brochures and pamphlets.
