Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Benefits Specialist III to join our team at the Commonwealth of Virginia. This advanced-level position requires a strong understanding of public assistance programs and the ability to conduct complex eligibility determinations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct initial and ongoing eligibility determinations for public assistance programs
  • Review cases for accuracy and uniformity, identifying significant errors or problems
  • Provide quality control by examining cases completed by other eligibility workers
  • Monitor program efficacy and trends, completing seasonal, quarterly, and yearly reports
  • Participate in task forces, strategic planning, and mentoring volunteers, students, and new employees
  • Teach classes and conduct outreach to promote agency programs
  • Prepare reports on quality control and make recommendations to the supervisor
  • Explain programs and rights and responsibilities to applicants and recipients
  • Carry a caseload of clients receiving public assistance with complex issues
  • Serve as a resource to staff and the public on public assistance programs and eligibility requirements
Requirements
  • Considerable knowledge of applicable laws, codes, policies, and procedures related to public assistance programs
  • Basic human behavior and financial assistance programs sufficient to determine benefits eligibility
  • Human services programs and how each interrelates
  • Mathematics to calculate percentages, formulas, and averages to solve mathematical problems
  • Interviewing techniques such as data collection, interrogation, and investigation
Preferred Qualifications
  • Additional related work experience in benefit programs
  • Any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
Working Conditions

This position requires the ability to work independently and as part of a team, with a strong emphasis on customer service and communication skills. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of public assistance programs and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
