Youth Indigenous Cultural Specialist

Role Summary
Vancouver Coastal Health is seeking a Youth Indigenous Cultural Practitioner to join the Indigenous Mental Health and Substance Use team.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide culturally competent care to Indigenous youth with complex substance use and mental health issues.
- Support the development and implementation of traditional wellness programs in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside neighborhood.
- Collaborate with VCH clinicians across Mental Health, Substance Use, and Primary Care services to integrate traditional wellness into care plans.
- Work in outreach capacity to provide culturally safe interventions for Indigenous clients experiencing homelessness.
- Provide strength-based and trauma-informed cultural interventions in the context of care plans.
- Develop and enhance community communications and relationships with VCH clinicians.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in a related field or relevant experience with demonstrated work with Indigenous communities.
- Experience in the health authority system, particularly working with Indigenous individuals, communities, or organizations.
- Experience coordinating and delivering traditional wellness/medicine within communities.
Knowledge and Abilities
- Comprehensive knowledge of culturally safe care and Indigenous Cultural Safety Training.
- In-depth knowledge of First Nations, Inuit, and Metis Peoples and history.
- Understanding of provincial and federal guiding principles and documents for eliminating systemic racism in healthcare.
- Ability to identify and recognize health system gaps and barriers for Indigenous individuals and communities.
- Ability to recognize power inequities within the healthcare system associated with colonialism.
- Knowledge of the Mental Health Act and its application to client rights and staff obligations.
- Basic computer literacy to operate a client care information system and software.
