Indigenous Justice Advocate

Empowered by the First Nations Leadership Council, the BC First Nations Justice Council (BCFNJC) is a leading organization in reducing Indigenous representation in the criminal justice system. We strive to support Nations in achieving sovereignty over justice.
About the Role:
This full-time staff lawyer position at the Indigenous Justice Centre will leverage legal expertise to represent Indigenous clients facing criminal charges and MCFD proceedings. The goal is to reduce incarceration rates among Indigenous people and provide culturally safe services. As part of our team, you will work closely with clients to access necessary legal and social supports, ensuring they receive holistic care.
Main Responsibilities:
- Provide legal representation for criminal and child protection matters
- Advocate for diversion from the formal court system to less intrusive measures
- Collaborate with the Resource and Support Worker to offer wrap-around services
- Develop working relationships with Indigenous communities and service providers
- Work with clients to create alternative care plans and advocate for Gladue Reports
- Maintain comprehensive client files and statistical data
Requirements and Qualifications:
- Canadian Law Society membership, preferably British Columbia
- J.D. considered an asset; 1-5 years litigation experience in criminal defence, including MCFD exposure
- Culturally sensitive environment provision ability
- Familiarity with Canada's Criminal Justice System and BC's child protection system
- Knowledge of local agencies offering indigenous justice services and support services
- Self-motivated individual with strong organizational skills and effective communication
Benefits and Remuneration:
- $100,000 - $120,000 annual salary, commensurate with education and experience
- Extended benefits package, including health and dental coverage, personal days, paid vacation, and RRSP/TFSA savings plans
- One-year fixed-term contract, with opportunity for extension based on performance
Reporting and Location:The successful candidate will report directly to the Provincial Director of the Indigenous Justice Centres and be based in Vancouver, BC.
