About the Role

We are seeking a highly motivated and compassionate Indigenous Support Worker to join our team at Nuu-chah-nulth/Coast Salish. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who is passionate about supporting students with diverse needs.

Job Summary

The successful candidate will work collaboratively with our Community Development Department to provide individualized support to students in a school-based setting. You will aid students on Individualized Educational Plans, facilitating their social, emotional, and academic development. Your role will involve building positive relationships with student families, supporting participation in reading and math programs, and assisting students in carrying out programs set out by consultants.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist with the development, implementation, and monitoring of Individual Learning Plans for students with Individual Education Plans;
  • Facilitate student social, emotional, and academic development;
  • Build positive relations with student families to keep lines of communication from school to home open;
  • Support and facilitate students participating in reading and math programs;
  • Assist students in carrying out programs as set out by consultants (e.g., Occupational Therapist, Physiotherapist, Speech and Language Pathologist, and Psychologist);
  • Coach and reinforce students in prepared exercises in academic and non-academic program components;
  • Assist generally in the development and delivery of recreational, cultural, and community events;
  • Co-lead student support groups (e.g., after-school club);
  • Model commitment to open, responsible action;
  • Guide students in life skills training (e.g., communication, social skills, problem-solving, conflict resolution, assertiveness training, self-management skills);
  • Organize, prepare, and duplicate a variety of classroom aids and materials;
  • Use computers and specialized equipment to provide support and instruction;
  • Supervise students and maintain order and safety on school grounds, in classrooms, on field trips, and in various settings within the community;
  • Exercise sound judgment in dealing with a variety of situations and considerable initiative, empathy, and understanding of the many and varied conditions/issues faced by behaviorally challenging students;
  • Model and demonstrate restitution skills and methods for restorative practices;
  • Assist students in making restitutions and learning anger management skills;
  • Compile information and materials for meetings with parents and relevant personnel and participate in same;
  • Collect student learning and behavior data (records, reports, plans, including functional assessment data);
  • Document and report incidents in a timely manner;
  • Provide intervention and safe support for students during and after emotional outbursts;
  • Participate in all training and professional development;
  • Perform other assigned duties that are within the area of knowledge and skills required by the job description;

Requirements

We are looking for someone with:

  • Completion of Grade 12;
  • Working knowledge of computer hardware and software;
  • Must be physically able to perform the job;
  • Able to participate in activities such as swimming, hiking, and biking;
  • Must be willing to complete job-related training, including Responsible Adult certification and First Aid and CPR;
  • Must undergo and successfully pass a Criminal Record Check vulnerable sector.

Desirable Qualifications

  • First aid and CPR;
  • Responsible Adult certification;
  • ECE Certificate;
  • Two years' related experience or two years level of post-secondary education; or equivalent combination of training and experience;
  • Specialized skills to assist students with anxiety disorders, self-esteem issues, sensory needs, depression, drug and alcohol effects, anger management, and reactive attachment;
  • Knowledge of and awareness and understanding of cultural and socio-economic history of the Coast Salish people and the Tsleil-Waututh community.

Salary Range

$45,000 - $60,000 per annum
