About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Legal Counsel, Privacy and Data Protection to join our dynamic in-house legal team at KPMG in Canada. As a key member of our team, you will play a critical role in assisting the Deputy General Counsel, Regulatory and Professional Compliance and Chief Privacy Officer in the development, implementation, management, and monitoring of our privacy and data protection policies, processes, and programs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct thorough privacy impact assessments for new technologies, applications, processes, and service lines to ensure compliance with Canadian federal and provincial privacy laws and regulations, as well as CASL and GDPR.
  • Remediate and document data breaches in a timely and effective manner, ensuring minimal disruption to our business operations.
  • Negotiate the privacy and data protection components of client and supplier contracts, ensuring that our organization's interests are protected.
  • Prepare submissions in response to access to information consultations, demonstrating our commitment to transparency and accountability.
  • Provide ongoing guidance to our client-facing business units and internal departments on matters related to privacy and data protection, ensuring that our team members are equipped to handle complex issues.
  • Attend to the privacy and data protection aspects of internal and external audits, certifications, and risk management reviews, ensuring that our organization remains compliant with relevant regulations.
  • Oversee external counsel as required, ensuring that our organization receives expert advice on complex matters.
Requirements
  • 2-5 years' experience in advising on privacy and data protection matters, preferably through a combination of law firm and in-house experience.
  • Knowledgeable in all Canadian federal and provincial privacy laws and regulations, as well as CASL and GDPR.
  • Hold a degree in law, and be licensed to practice law in Canada.
  • Certification as a privacy specialist, while not mandatory, is preferable.
