The Canada Games Centre is a vibrant multi-sport community and recreation centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Job OverviewThis leadership role is responsible for the overall operation of our aquatic programs, supervising staff, planning schedules, conducting performance evaluations, and aiding in program development. This role also performs administrative tasks, assists with program delivery, handles personnel matters, and ensures adherence to safety policies and procedures.
Key Responsibilities- Oversee the delivery of aquatic programs and services
- Ensure programming meets Lifesaving Society standards, CGC standards, and internal policies and procedures
- Actively supervise weekday evening/weekend morning lessons on the pool deck
- Evaluate staff and programs to ensure high-quality program delivery
- Provide immediate swim instructor/lifeguard coverage for unexpected demands and fill-in as substitute instructor/lifeguard as required
- Create and manage staff schedules for aquatic programs
- Communicate effectively with staff and the public, addressing concerns efficiently
- Work with Aquatics Coordinator to ensure program quality aligns with the Centre's values and Sport for Life vision
- Assist in developing procedural documents and training materials necessary for staff training
- Handle program registration, changes, and cancellations
- Show independent judgment when needed, maintain a professional demeanor under pressure, and take charge of emergency situations in absence of Aquatics Coordinators
- 3-5 years work experience in an aquatic setting in a Supervisory role
- National Lifeguard Award (NL) & Airway Management – Pool option (current within two years)
- Intermediate Workplace First Aid
- Swim for Life Instructor (SFL)
- Lifesaving Instructor (LSI)
- Instructor Training
- Examiner
- Experience in program development and implementation in a busy recreation environment
- Supervising, mentoring, and coaching staff experience
- Inclusion programming experience
- A variable work schedule including early morning, late evening, and weekend hours. Current schedule is Tuesday–Friday 11:00am to 7:00pm and Saturday 7:30am to 3:30pm. Schedule may change based on program needs. Additional POD shifts will be scheduled.
