Job Summary

The University of Waterloo is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Stationary Engineer 2nd Class to join our facilities operations team. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of our central plant and satellite equipment used for heating and cooling.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Planning
    • Support strategic planning efforts to ensure the long-term sustainability of our campus facilities and infrastructure.
    • Contribute to the development of plans to maximize opportunities for efficient delivery of campus services and optimal investments in University-wide infrastructure.
  • Operations
    • Operate and monitor utility plants, building automation, and fire systems to ensure optimal performance and efficiency.
    • Perform routine maintenance on equipment such as boilers, pumps, air compressors, water softeners, chillers, and deionizers to ensure safe and efficient operation.
    • Inspect and maintain building HVAC, mechanical, and plumbing system components to ensure they are functioning properly.
    • Respond to emergency calls, including fire alarms, and determine the appropriate course of action.
    • Maintain satellite equipment and ammonia-based refrigeration units to ensure they are operating safely and efficiently.
    • Create reports on equipment conditions and requisition materials as needed.
  • Health & Safety
    • Ensure that University facilities and departmental activities comply with all applicable legislation, regulations, codes, and standards related to facilities operations and occupational health and environmental safety.
  • Other
    • Provide training, instruction, and work direction to other team members as required.
    • Coordinate the work of employees assigned to assist with tasks.
    • Perform the work of other trades as required, within the limits of their skill and code requirements.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of a grade 12 education and a Second Class Provincial Certificate.
  • Five (5) years recent experience as an Operating Engineer.
  • Experience in the operation and maintenance of oil and gas fired boilers, chillers, water softeners, air compressors, and ammonia-based refrigeration units and related auxiliary equipment.
  • Familiarity with boiler control and building automation systems.
  • Valid 'G' class driver's license.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
