Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Recreation Therapist Assistant to join our team at PHSA. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for providing support to our Recreation Therapists in the delivery of recreation therapy programs to patients in our acute rehabilitation setting.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist Recreation Therapists in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of recreation therapy programs for patients in our acute rehabilitation setting.
  • Provide direct support to patients in the delivery of recreation therapy programs, including activities such as arts and crafts, cooking, music, sports, games, and gardening.
  • Monitor and evaluate patient progress through recreation therapy programs and report relevant observations to Recreation Therapists and other healthcare professionals.
  • Set up and organize furnishings and equipment for recreation therapy programs, including arranging rooms and providing direction to volunteers.
  • Make adaptations to recreation activities and equipment as recommended by Recreation Therapists and other healthcare professionals to enable patients to achieve and maintain maximum potential for independence.
  • Maintain inventory of equipment, designated supplies, and tools for recreation activities, identifying missing items and reporting malfunctioning equipment and supply needs to designated personnel.
  • Prepare patients for activities, including assisting with appropriate clothing and personal supplies, and checking with other healthcare providers for potential contraindications to patient participation.
  • Provide functional direction to volunteers during recreation therapy programs, communicating established plans and demonstrating related techniques.
  • Transport patients on group outings, operating a passenger bus with a seating capacity of 11 to 25 passengers, including the driver.
  • Complete required reports, including recording workload statistics in accordance with established procedures for program reporting purposes.
  • Carry out responsibilities in accordance with health and safety requirements, immediately reporting unsafe situations to supervisors or other appropriate personnel.
Requirements
  • Grade 12, completion of a Recreation Therapy Program, plus two (2) years' recent, related experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Valid class 4 vehicle license (unrestricted) as required per vehicle(s).
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to deal with others effectively.
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
  • Ability to teach.
  • Ability to organize work.
  • Ability to operate related equipment.
