Overview

The Communications Officer plays a crucial role in shaping and executing effective communication strategies to promote the objectives of the Institute for Quantum Computing (IQC). This position is focused on enhancing knowledge dissemination, fostering partnerships, and ensuring comprehensive reporting.

Key Responsibilities

Research and Content Development

  • Identify and leverage opportunities to elevate the profile of IQC, ensuring responsiveness to the communication needs of stakeholders.
  • Create and refine content tailored for diverse communication channels and audiences, reflecting the high standards of a leading research institution.
  • Conduct thorough research, engage with researchers and technical experts, and synthesize findings into compelling science and technology narratives.
  • Revise and enhance written materials based on feedback from researchers and editorial teams.
  • Maintain an up-to-date repository of marketing materials, including presentations and brochures that highlight IQC's strengths in quantum research.
  • Gather, analyze, and manage data to fulfill IQC's reporting obligations to its funding bodies.
  • Draft professional correspondence and prepare template documents to support communication efforts.
  • Respond to inquiries from both internal and external sources, collaborating effectively with IQC communications personnel.
  • Build and maintain a network of media relations and design specialists, staying informed about effective communication channels.
  • Serve as a resource for IQC researchers, providing guidance on communication best practices.
  • Write press releases, research profiles, and opinion pieces for distribution through appropriate channels.
  • Ensure all written communications are consistent, accurate, and of high quality.

Knowledge Mobilization

  • Formulate strategies to maximize the impact of IQC research and effectively communicate these impacts.
  • Assist researchers in articulating visionary quantum initiatives that resonate with funding requirements.
  • Seek and pursue collaborative opportunities for research translation.
  • Collaborate with campus communicators to source news stories that showcase IQC's research strengths.
  • Establish connections within the Institute to identify media opportunities for profiling research.
  • Support faculty in developing a media presence that aligns with their research endeavors.
  • Monitor and analyze trends and events that may influence faculty profiles.
  • Contribute to Media Relations Editorial Calendars for strategic planning.

Digital Communications

  • Initiate and oversee updates to IQC's digital platforms.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of digital communication tools using analytics.
  • Document events through photography and enhance digital content.
  • Stay informed about emerging technologies and communication opportunities.
  • Provide support to the communications team with copywriting and editing tasks.
  • Attend events to capture key messages and create content for various platforms.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with partners across the campus to support communication initiatives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary degree in journalism, public relations, or a related field.
  • Professional training in science communications.
  • Minimum of five years' experience in science writing or journalism.
  • Proven ability to synthesize complex information.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience in quantum communications is preferred.
  • Strong interviewing and media research skills.
  • Ability to translate technical concepts into accessible language.
  • Expertise in producing high-quality written content aligned with institutional branding.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines effectively.
  • Proficient in digital communication tools and strategies.
  • Commitment to fostering equity, diversity, and inclusion in communication practices.
