Overview
The role of the Communications Officer encompasses the development and execution of strategic communications to promote the objectives of the Institute for Quantum Computing (IQC) at the University of Waterloo. This position is pivotal in identifying communication prospects, crafting engaging science and technology narratives, and producing impactful marketing materials and digital content. The officer will also provide leadership in communication strategies for event planning and engage with key stakeholders within and outside the university.
Key Responsibilities
Research and Content Development
- Identify and implement strategies to enhance the visibility of IQC, ensuring responsiveness to the communication needs of stakeholders.
- Create and refine content for diverse communication channels, maintaining a tone that reflects a leading research institution.
- Conduct thorough research, interview subject matter experts, and synthesize information to generate compelling science and technology stories.
- Review and revise content based on feedback from researchers and editorial staff.
- Maintain an updated collection of marketing materials, including presentations and brochures that highlight IQC's strengths in quantum research.
- Compile and analyze data to support IQC's reporting obligations to its funding bodies.
- Draft professional correspondence and develop template documents as needed.
- Respond to information requests from various stakeholders and collaborate with IQC communications personnel on shared objectives.
- Build and maintain a network of media relations, graphic design, and communication specialists to effectively promote IQC's goals.
- Serve as a resource for IQC researchers, enhancing their communication skills and providing expert guidance.
- Write press releases, research profiles, and opinion pieces for distribution through the university's media relations.
- Ensure the consistency and quality of messaging across all written communications.
Knowledge Mobilization
- Develop strategies to maximize the impact of IQC research and effectively communicate those impacts.
- Assist researchers in articulating new quantum initiatives in an inspiring manner that aligns with funder expectations.
- Seek and pursue new collaboration and research translation opportunities.
- Collaborate with campus communicators to source and secure news stories that showcase IQC's research excellence.
- Foster relationships within the Institute to identify media opportunities that highlight IQC research.
- Support faculty in building a media presence that aligns with their research activities.
- Monitor trends and events that may influence faculty profiles and communicate insights to the team.
- Contribute to Media Relations Editorial Calendars for strategic planning.
Digital Communications
- Initiate and oversee updates to IQC's digital platforms.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of digital communication strategies using analytics and other assessment tools.
- Document events through photography and enhance digital content.
- Stay informed about emerging technologies and communication trends to maintain a contemporary presence for IQC.
- Support the communications team with copywriting and editing tasks as needed.
- Attend events to capture key messages, take photos, and network for content creation.
Additional Duties
- Collaborate with campus partners to advance communication initiatives.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- A post-secondary degree in journalism, public relations, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
- Professional training in science communications is preferred.
- A minimum of five years of experience in science writing or a related media environment.
- Proven ability to synthesize complex information into accessible formats.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with strong editing capabilities.
- Experience in quantum communications is advantageous.
- Demonstrated expertise in conducting interviews for media profiles.
- Strong research skills in news and media contexts.
- Ability to translate technical concepts into clear language for diverse audiences.
- Expertise in producing high-quality written content that aligns with university communication standards.
- Excellent critical analysis, editing, and proofreading skills.
- Proven ability to manage multiple deadlines while maintaining accuracy and consistency.
