Overview

The Public Relations Specialist plays a crucial role in crafting and disseminating professional communications to promote the objectives of the University of Waterloo's Institute for Quantum Computing (IQC). This position focuses on identifying communication prospects, creating engaging science and technology narratives, and developing marketing collateral and digital content. The Specialist will provide strategic communication leadership for event planning and engagement with key stakeholders both within and outside the university.

Responsibilities

Research and Writing

  • Identify and implement strategies to enhance the visibility of IQC, ensuring responsiveness to the communication needs of stakeholders.
  • Compose and refine content for diverse communication channels, maintaining a tone that reflects a premier research institution.
  • Conduct thorough research, interview experts, synthesize information, and produce compelling science and technology articles and reports.
  • Edit and revise materials based on feedback from researchers and editorial staff.
  • Develop and curate a comprehensive collection of marketing resources, including presentations and brochures, highlighting IQC's strengths in quantum research.
  • Gather, analyze, and manage data to fulfill IQC's reporting obligations to its supporters.
  • Draft professional correspondence and prepare template documents as needed.
  • Respond to inquiries from both internal and external sources, collaborating effectively with IQC communications personnel.
  • Maintain a network of media relations and design specialists, staying informed about effective communication channels to promote IQC's mission.
  • Serve as a resource for IQC researchers, providing guidance on communication strategies and best practices.
  • Write press releases, research profiles, and opinion pieces for distribution by the university's media relations office.
  • Ensure consistency and high quality in all written communications.

Knowledge Mobilization

  • Formulate strategies to maximize the impact of IQC research and effectively communicate these impacts.
  • Assist researchers in articulating visionary quantum initiatives that resonate with funding requirements.
  • Identify and pursue new collaborative opportunities for research translation.
  • Collaborate with campus communicators to source and secure news stories that highlight IQC's research achievements.
  • Build relationships across the Institute to uncover media opportunities that showcase IQC research.
  • Support faculty in developing a media presence that aligns with their research endeavors.
  • Monitor trends and events that may influence faculty profiles and keep the team informed.
  • Contribute to editorial calendars for media relations to aid in planning.

Digital Communications

  • Initiate and oversee updates to IQC's digital platforms.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of digital communication channels using analytics tools.
  • Document events through photography and enhance digital content.
  • Stay abreast of emerging technologies and communication trends to maintain a relevant online presence for IQC.
  • Provide backup writing and editing support to the communications team as needed.
  • Attend events to capture key messages, take photos, and network for content creation.

Other

  • Collaborate with campus partners to support communication initiatives.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary degree in journalism, public relations, or a related field.
  • Professional training in science communications.
  • Five or more years of experience in science writing or journalism.
  • Proven ability to synthesize complex information into accessible content.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with strong editing capabilities.
  • Experience in quantum communications is an asset.
  • Extensive interviewing experience for media profiles.
  • Strong research skills in news and media.
  • Ability to translate technical concepts into clear language for diverse audiences.
  • Expertise in producing high-quality written content aligned with university standards.
  • Strong analytical, editing, and proofreading skills.
