About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Financial Controls Specialist to join our Group Solutions team at THE EMPIRE LIFE INS. CO. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for ensuring the accuracy, reliability, and compliance of our financial systems, processes, and reports.

Key Responsibilities
  • Define, implement, test, maintain, and support processes and appropriate controls for financial transactions.
  • Identify potential risks and control deficiencies, and recommend appropriate actions to mitigate these risks.
  • Accurately and timely complete account reconciliations for the Group Finance and Controls Division.
  • Regularly review complex reconciliations for all Group accounts and resolve financial discrepancies and errors.
  • Act as a subject matter expert and technical liaison for Administrative Service Only (ASO) product and develop controls/processes for new or changing ASO arrangements.
  • Manage ASO month-end balancing and reconciliations processes.
  • Verify and correct journal entries, ledger balances, and other financial data, coordinating with other business units when necessary.
  • Compile data from various sources and support the month-end close process, including accruals, adjustments, and month-end analysis for various accounts.
  • Monitor, review, analyze, and reconcile GL accounts to ensure accuracy and proactively identify and report on variances.
  • Support the design and implementation of controls for new product lines.
  • Collaborate with internal and external auditors and submit necessary data/documents.
  • Stay up-to-date with industry trends and best practices in financial controls.
  • Work with other Finance team members to continuously improve and automate team processes and templates.
  • Perform ad-hoc tasks as required.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Professional designation (e.g., CPA, CFA, ASA) or working towards a designation is an asset.
  • 3-5 years of experience in financial analysis, auditing, or financial controls.
  • Knowledge of group benefit contracts and products.
  • General ledger and transactional accounting experience is an asset.
  • Strong working knowledge of spreadsheet and database software.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Microsoft Suite - Excel and Access.
  • Language proficiency in English is required for communicating with customers, advisors, or employees across Canada.
