Overview

The Contra Costa Youth Continuum of Services (CCYCS) program is a collaborative initiative involving both public and private sectors, aimed at providing essential support to homeless youth. Our mission is rooted in the belief that every young individual possesses the potential to make positive choices when offered appropriate guidance and opportunities. We celebrate the diversity, resilience, and strength that each youth brings to our community.

Position Summary

Under the direction of the CCYCS Site Supervisor, the Youth Shelter Coordinator is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of assigned youth facilities, which include a 15-bed emergency shelter and a 13-bed transitional housing program. This role is crucial in ensuring that young adults aged 18-24 receive safe housing and comprehensive support services. The Coordinator will monitor compliance with shelter protocols and provide necessary assistance, including counseling, coaching, and crisis management.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the safety and well-being of young clients in an emergency shelter setting, ensuring access to essential services such as meals and housing.
  • Conduct intake assessments for young applicants to evaluate their housing needs and eligibility for support services.
  • Manage daily operations of the emergency shelter, ensuring a structured and supportive environment.
  • Facilitate engagement activities that promote a safe and healthy communal living atmosphere.
  • Communicate effectively with clients, staff, law enforcement, and other stakeholders to assess and address shelter needs.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of client interactions and incidents to uphold a comprehensive record of services provided.
  • Respond to emergency situations, including medical and mental health crises, ensuring the safety of all residents.
  • Conduct regular site inspections to maintain a secure and welcoming environment for both staff and residents.
  • Perform light housekeeping duties to ensure cleanliness and organization of the facility.
  • Report any safety concerns or unusual occurrences to management promptly.
  • Participate in mandatory training sessions and team meetings.
  • Fulfill additional responsibilities as assigned.

Program-Specific Duties

  • Supervise youth in both emergency shelter and transitional living programs.
  • Support operational hours by providing wake-up calls, medication reminders, and meal preparations.
  • Encourage youth participation in daily activities and assist with chores while enforcing curfews and quiet hours.
  • Facilitate recreational activities to foster positive relationships among residents.
  • Provide individualized counseling and intervention for youth facing challenges in adhering to program guidelines.

Qualifications

  • A high school diploma is required; experience working with youth or a strong desire to support homeless youth is preferred.
  • Knowledge of community resources and the challenges faced by homeless and at-risk youth is essential.
  • Successful completion of a background check is mandatory.
  • Bilingual candidates, particularly in Spanish or Southeast Asian languages, are encouraged to apply.

Minimum Requirements

  • Effective communication skills and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Comprehensive understanding of issues related to homelessness, mental health, and cultural diversity.
  • Ability to pass a criminal and fingerprint background check.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience working with vulnerable populations or individuals with special needs.
  • Familiarity with Contra Costa County and local social service providers is advantageous.
