Position Overview

Service Corporation International is seeking a dedicated and skilled Funeral Director or Apprentice to enhance our operations. This role presents a unique opportunity to work in a funeral and cemetery combination facility that caters to a diverse clientele, emphasizing a strong commitment to community service. With an on-site crematorium and personal care center, this position fosters collaboration and teamwork.

Key Responsibilities

Arrangements Coordination

Engage with the deceased's next of kin, demonstrating empathy and understanding. Collect or verify essential information, discuss the family's needs, and schedule appointments accordingly.

May be involved in the respectful transfer of the deceased, ensuring compliance with company protocols. Responsible for updating status in proprietary systems.

Welcome families and guide them through the arrangements process, assessing their needs and summarizing desired outcomes. Discuss available insurance options and promote various services and merchandise.

Facilitate the transition to the Funeral Services Counselor/Advisor for further discussions on cemetery options and contract finalization.

Service Direction

Confirm authorization for service arrangements and act as Master of Ceremonies for visitations, funerals, or graveside services, ensuring a professional and compassionate atmosphere.

Oversee the preparation of the deceased, ensuring all aspects meet contractual obligations and family expectations. Provide guidance to team members as necessary.

Engage with families to fulfill their requests while identifying opportunities for pre-need services.

Event Management

Handle various event planning tasks, including resource allocation and ordering necessary items such as music and flowers. Create memorial products, manage event setups, and ensure proper post-event clean-up.

May also perform various attendant duties, including ushering and assisting during services.

General Duties

Work under general supervision, with new associates learning to apply their licensure in a business context. Ensure adherence to regulations and company policies while collaborating with peers for support.

Demonstrate accountability and take the initiative to communicate about assignments and workload. Adjust to new processes and responsibilities as needed.

Qualifications

Graduated from an accredited mortuary science program.

Possess a current Funeral Director license as mandated by provincial regulations.

Valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record is required.

Experience

  • Previous industry experience is preferred.

Skills and Abilities

Strong cognitive abilities, including problem-solving and adaptability.

Results-oriented with a proactive approach to project management.

Positive attitude and a commitment to professional development in the industry.

Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.

Public speaking proficiency with the ability to influence and engage audiences.

Familiarity with database management and automated processes.

Work Environment

Work settings include both indoor and outdoor environments across various weather conditions.

Professional attire is required when interacting with families.

Physical demands include the ability to sit or stand for extended periods and the capacity to lift and move items as necessary.

Flexibility in availability is essential, as services may occur outside standard business hours.
