Service Corporation International is seeking a dedicated and experienced Funeral Director or Apprentice to contribute to our mission. This position offers a unique opportunity to work in a funeral and cemetery combined facility that caters to a diverse clientele while maintaining a strong commitment to community service. With an on-site crematorium and personal care center, this role emphasizes collaboration and teamwork.

Key Responsibilities

Arrangements Conference

Engage with the next of kin of the deceased, demonstrating empathy and care. Collect or verify essential information about the deceased and their family, discuss their needs, and schedule appointments for arrangements.

May be involved in removals or transfers, ensuring adherence to company standards. Treats the deceased with the utmost respect and updates removal statuses in proprietary systems.

Welcome the next of kin and guide them to the meeting area. Facilitate the Arrangements Conference by assessing needs and summarizing desired outcomes. Discuss available life insurance options and promote various services and merchandise.

Transition the Arrangements Conference to the Funeral Services Counselor to present options for cemetery property and merchandise, including pricing and contract finalization.

Review and authorize any changes to merchandise and service contracts.

Directing Services

Confirm authorization to proceed with service arrangements. Act as Master of Ceremonies for visitations, funerals, or graveside services, ensuring a professional and compassionate atmosphere.

Inspect the deceased and adjust casket dressing or attire as necessary. Ensure that all services align with contractual agreements and family expectations, initiating corrective actions when needed.

Engage with families to fulfill their requests for death care services while identifying leads for pre-need services.

Event Planning

Handle various event planning tasks, including resource allocation and ordering music, flowers, or catering services. Create memorial products, prepare event spaces, and manage post-event clean-up and organization.

May perform various attendant duties, including ushering or serving as a pallbearer.

Represent the organization at community or charity events to promote services.

General Duties

Work under general supervision, with new associates learning to apply their licensure in a business context. Collaborate with peers and management for guidance and support.

Demonstrate accountability for actions and ensure compliance with all relevant regulations.

Proactively communicate about assignments and seek additional responsibilities when workload permits.

Qualifications

Graduated from an accredited mortuary science program.

Possess a current Funeral Director license as mandated by provincial regulations.

Hold a valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.

Experience

  • Previous industry experience is preferred.

Skills and Abilities

Strong cognitive abilities, including problem-solving and planning skills.

Results-oriented with a proactive approach to project management.

Positive attitude and self-motivation to advance knowledge in the field.

Ability to build professional relationships and communicate effectively.

Public speaking skills with the capacity to influence and achieve consensus.

Proficient in using databases and automated processes.

Work Environment

Work is conducted both indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions.

Professional business attire is required when interacting with families.

Physical demands include prolonged periods of sitting or standing and the ability to lift and move up to 150 pounds.

Flexibility in scheduling may be necessary as services can occur outside of standard business hours.
